Podcast Basics

A podcast is a primarily audio form of content on our site, with some additional metadata. Generally, podcasts are pulled in automatically from our podcast hosting platform and require no manual intervention.

The Podcast Edit Form

  • Title: The public title that will appear to all users and show up in search results
  • Subtitle: This field is currently not shown anywhere on the site
  • Primary Topic: Once marked, the article will appear on this topic’s topic page and topic email.
  • Secondary Topic: Once marked, the article will appear on these topic(s) pages and their topic emails (if applicable).

Note: At this point, there is almost no functional difference between primary and secondary topics. We keep both just because that was how they were originally designed when there used to be a difference between the two. There is some functionality for secondary topics for articles that don’t apply to podcasts.

  • Image URL: Podcasts take a square image. Images are usually hosted on our podcasting platform. Therefore, we only add the link the the image here. If you want to add a custom image, there are two options:
  • Podcast Audio: A URL ending in .mp3 or another audio type. Audio files are usually hosted on our podcasting platform. Therefore, we only add the link to the audio here. It is recommended that all podcasts are hosted in our hosting platform and pulled automatically into the site.
  • Duration: Duration of the podcast in hours, minutes, and seconds. This field is not used in the platform.
  • Summary: This is optional text that will appear as the short description of the article on views like the homepage, email, etc. If you leave this blank, the site will automatically take the first one or two sentences.

Note: When an article starts with extra punctuation (e.g. the period in “Dr. Jim Smith says”) then it can be useful to manually populate the Summary field. Extra punctuation looks like sentence breaks to the website so it can grab inaccurate summaries.

  • Body: A short description for your podcast.
  • Published: Published article appear publicly on the site. Non-published articles will be saved as drafts but only be visible to site admins.
